Hot chocolate is perfect at Christmas

Hot chocolate and Christmas go together like cold weather and snow. You just shouldn’t have one without the other! We live in the Midwest and winters here can be very unpredictable.

I’m of the opinion that if it’s going to be cold, gray and gloomy outside, it might as well be a productive cold and snow! I love the snow. It just makes everything seem brighter. Kind of like hot chocolate. It just makes the winters and time spent with family during the holidays that much brighter.

How to make the best hot chocolate ever

My husband is “THE” hot chocolate maker in our house. He takes hot chocolate to a whole new level by using real cream, vanilla, and a heavy hand when it comes to the cocoa and sugar, plus a couple of secret ingredients.

His hot chocolate is rich and decadent. A real treat that our children look forward to every year.

Print out the lid or tag labels

Once you have the homemade hot chocolate mix labels, simply print out either the lid labels or the tag labels.

For the lid labels, cut out along the outside of the circle and place on the lid of your Mason Jar. Screw on the band and affix to the bottle with some bakers twine, string or ribbon.

If you prefer, you could print out the labels, punch a hole in the top and affix to the jar with some string, twine or ribbon.

For the tag labels, cut out along the square line, punch a hole in the top of the label and tie onto the lid of the jar with some string, twine (my favorite) or ribbon.

  1. Pam,
Thank you for sharing a simple HOMEMADE recipe. I have used this for years to make hot chocolate for my children, and I often give it for Christmas presents – especially for the elderly and shut-ins. It is delicious and such an inexpensive way to share oneself with others. Since many people I know are diabetic, I substitute Splenda and skip the marshmallows.

    1. Barbara, thanks so much for you kind words. When you make the mix with Splenda, how much do you use? Have you tried Stevia?

    2. I have a question, may be a dumb one but just wanted to clarify, do you make this recipe for each individual quart jar? or will this mix fill more than one jar at a time?

      1. Hi Christin,
That’s a great question! Yes, repeat the recipe on the recipe card for each jar.

For each individual quart jar, you’ll need:

        INGREDIENTS FOR ONE QUART:
        ¾ cup powdered creamer
        ¾ cup powdered milk
        ¾ cup powdered sugar
        6 tablespoons cocoa powder
        4 tablespoons milk chocolate chips
        1 cup mini marshmallows

Have fun making this hot chocolate mix — and happy holidays, Christin!

        Best wishes,
Carrie from Ideas for the Home by Kenarry®

  2. I was wondering if you could translate the recipe tag for the hot cocoa mix in spanish because I want to give it to my mom as a christmas gift but she doesn’t understand english.

    1. Yessica, thank you for your interest in the recipe tags. Unfortunately, I don’t speak Spanish and do not have the expertise to translate.
I would highly recommend the use of Avery’s Design & Print Online (https://www.avery.com/software/design-and-print/) to create custom labels for your mother. Even if you don’t use the Avery labels, you can use them as a template to print on cardstock.
I recommend Avery 22817 for the 2” round labels and Avery 22805 for the 1.5” square gift tags.
      I hope this helps!!

    1. Hi Mary Ann,
That’s an excellent question! The powdered creamer and powdered milk in the hot chocolate mix will give it a creamier texture. Try making it as listed but if you find it’s too rich/dark tasting for your son, you can add more of the powdered creamer and/or powdered milk to offset that. Next to try – when you actually fix a mug of hot chocolate you could make it with hot milk rather than boiling hot water to make it have a creamier taste. Last, another option is to throw in a little extra sugar since that helps counter the bitterness of the baking cocoa sometimes too! Give it a try — and then please do report back and let us know what you think!

      Happy holidays!
      Carrie from Kenarry

  3. I made this Hot Chocolate Mix for my Coworkers for Christmas gifts. I had to try some so I made a jar for myself. Let me just say how delicious it is! I’ll be making this recipe again.
