Hey there Kenarry readers! Trish here with an absolute-must-try and most-definitely-enjoy family recipe. That is if you love french toast like I love french toast! This sweet and savory French Toast Bake is perfect for summer weekends, brunch, holidays and, of course, all of the other days too. The best part about this breakfast casserole recipe is how amazing it tastes but second to the scrumptious flavor is the fact that it can be prepared the night before.

Personally, I like to serve french toast with orange juice. And, on that note, I like to serve orange juice with champagne. Ha! Along with mimosas, this breakfast casserole balances well with protein-packed Egg Muffins. Yum!

How to Make french toast bake

Tip: My favorite bread to use in this French Toast Bake is Sara Lee Artesian Bread or a loaf of sourdough from the bakery. However, I am certain that if you have a bread recipe this breakfast casserole would taste even better if it was made with homemade bread.

Tips for making Overnight French Toast

The full instructions are in the recipe card below, but here are some tips to help you out.

1. Melt, sprinkle & Prepare the breakfast casserole pan

Begin by melting butter in a microwave-safe dish then pour the butter into the bottom of your overnight breakfast casserole baking pan. Use a basting or pastry brush to brush butter onto the sides of the baking pan then sprinkle some of the brown sugar and cinnamon over the melted butter.

Next, cut the bread into bite size pieces. Layer the cut up bread evenly in the pan then prepare the wet ingredients by whisking together the eggs, milk, and vanilla until they are well combined. If desired, add salt to the mixture before pouring the liquid over the bread, cover the french toast bake with plastic wrap and place it in the refrigerator over night.

3. preheat, add sugar & butter then bake your breakfast casserole

Allow yourself 40 minutes to finish making your French Toast Bake when you plan to enjoy it. Preheat the oven. In a small mixing bowl mash the remaining butter together with the remaining brown sugar and white sugar. Drop dollops of the gritty butter mixture over the top of the breakfast casserole then bake your breakfast casserole until the top is golden brown.

4. serve & enjoy your french toast bake

Remove the pan from the oven and allow the French Toast Bake to rest for 3-4 minutes before cutting into serving size squares and serving. If desired, top your warm breakfast casserole with maple syrup (or try this Homemade Pumpkin Spice Syrup) and enjoy!

Ingredients

  • 12 slices thick bread
  • 1 stick unsalted butter, divided
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar, divided
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon, divided
  • 6 eggs
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla
  • 3 tablespoons sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt if desired
  • maple syrup optional

  • Begin by melting 1/4 cup butter in a microwave safe dish then pour the butter into the bottom of your overnight breakfast casserole baking pan.   • Next, cut all 12 slices of bread into bite size pieces. Layer the cut up bread evenly in the pan then prepare the wet ingredients by whisking together the eggs, milk and vanilla until they are well combined. If desired, add salt to mixture before pouring the liquid over the bread, cover the french toast bake with plastic wrap and place it in the refrigerator over night.
  • Allow yourself 40 minutes to finish making your French Toast Bake when you plan to enjoy it. Preheat the oven to 350* degrees. In a small mixing bowl mash the remaining 1/4 cup of butter together with the remaining 1/4 cup of brown sugar and 3 tablespoons of white sugar. Drop dollops of the gritty butter mixture over the top of the breakfast casserole then bake your breakfast casserole in a 350* degree oven for 30 minutes or until the top is golden brown.
  • Remove the pan from the oven and allow the French Toast Bake to rest for 3-4 minutes before cutting into serving size squares and serving. If desired, top your warm breakfast casserole with maple syrup and enjoy!
