Our oldest son, who we refer to as C1 on the blog, turns five soon. As we get ready to celebrate his coming birthday, I’ve been reminiscing about his previous birthdays here on Kenarry including the Teddy Bear Birthday when he turned one and the Curious George Birthday when he turned two. I also shared his Muppet Birthday last year when he turned four. The one missing from this set is the Mickey Mouse Birthday when he turned three, so I wanted to share that one with you today.

Before I get into sharing ideas from C1’s third birthday, though, I need to start with a little disclaimer. C1’s first three birthdays all took place before I started blogging so I apologize that the photos aren’t as high quality as what you usually find here on Kenarry. It was such a fun birthday, though, that I still wanted to share five ideas from C1’s Mickey Mouse birthday and hopefully inspire you with a few ways to celebrate your own child’s birthday!

Idea 1: Mickey Mouse Birthday Lunch

Cookie cutter sandwiches are a simple, but effective way to incorporate a birthday theme into your child’s lunch. It especially works well when the theme is something simple and iconic like Mickey Mouse’s head! I found a small metal Mickey Mouse cookie cutter set on Amazon that was great for creating two little Mickey Mouse shaped peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for our birthday boy.

Idea 2: Mickey Mouse Birthday Treasure Hunt

When C1 was turning three, he loved maps, so we created a treasure hunt for his Mickey Mouse birthday. The treasure hunt involved a map with 12 stops. Each stop had just a small hand drawn sketch of the location in our neighborhood on the map since he couldn’t read yet. The stops were connected by a whimsical dashed line. I didn’t attempt to make it an accurate map by any means! At each stop on the treasure hunt, there was a “clue” to help the treasure hunters find the next stop along with Mickey Mouse stickers to put on the map to show where they’d been:

Before C1 departed on the treasure hunt with his Dad and his Grandpa, I gave them four rules:

  1. You need to walk from one clue to the next. No running! (This was mostly so his Grandpa and Dad could keep up!)
  2. At each stop, you need to take a picture. (C1’s little brother was only a few months old at the time so I couldn’t go on the elaborate adventure and wanted to see how it went. This was also a great rule to help me get photos for our annual family album.)
  3. When you get to the final stop, you need to have all of the stickers on your map to get the final treasure.
  4. Have fun!

I also gave them a small backpack and an extra Mickey Mouse tote bag to collect their clues and treasures along the way. At each of the stops, the treasure hunters looked for a bright Mickey Mouse birthday treat bag containing the clue and treasure. Each of the “clues” described with a little rhyme or activity where to find the next stop on the treasure hunt. This can be as easy or as elaborate as you want. Here are a few examples of ones we used:

The first stop was Grandpa’s garden where they found a small Mickey Mouse garden shovel, an X in the dirt and this note:

“Ahoy thar mateys! If you want the buried clue,
Look for the X, then dig for a second or two.
And don’t forget – on the map the sticker you must place;
it will mark the locations you’ve already faced.”

Buried at the X was a small resealable plastic bag with the next rhyming clue telling them to go to a nearby picnic table. At the table, they found an envelope which contained small cards with letters and numbers and a few packets of fruit snacks. The clue said:

“What a mess all these letters are! They sure look a jumble,
but if you put them in number order, the mystery will crumble.
To know where to go, you must read the letters from left to right,
then enjoy these fruit snacks on the way to your next site.”

The cards spelled out: J-A-C-K-I-E-S   B-E-N-C-H, which they immediately knew was behind the neighbor’s house. They headed there and found Mickey Mouse bubbles with this clue:

“Argh! All this hunting for clues may make you weary with troubles.
Relax for a few minutes on the bench while you blow 20 bubbles.
Now pretend to be a Mickey marching band – pa rump pa pum pum
and march to find your next clue where you’d play your drum.”

The “drum” is a stump where C1 and his Grandpa often go on their walks so they knew right where to go for their next clue. It went on and on like this until they went to 12 different stops and eventually ended up back at the house. The BIG treasure at the end of the hunt was a new balance bike and Mickey Mouse bike helmet. What could be better for a Mickey Mouse birthday than a new bike, right?

Your treasure hunt can be as long or as short as you desire. The adults on the Mickey Mouse birthday treasure hunt thought they could have used a few less clues, but reported C1 stayed active and engaged the whole time. He loved relaying the entire adventure to me and showing me his map when they returned. With all the time and effort that went into the treasure hunt, I saved all the clues and activities. This way we can easily do it all again in a few years once C1 has forgotten the details and his little brother is old enough to enjoy it too.

If you’re planning to create your own treasure hunt, here are a few other ideas you could incorporate:

  • At one stop, the birthday boy had to put on Mickey Mouse gardening gloves and hop on one foot to the next location.
  • In another spot, they found empty paper towel rolls and had to look through them to spot a Mickey Mouse birthday balloon hidden at the next location.
  • For one of the other clues, I had used a program like PicMonkey to put words over a large Mickey Mouse picture. (PicMonkey is a free online tool I LOVE for editing graphics. You can upgrade to the “royale” version to get additional premium fonts, embellishments and other goodies.) I printed the image on card stock and then cut it apart. When they got to that location, they found all the pieces in an envelope and had to reassemble it to find out where to go next.
  • Include a few snacks and small treasures that match your theme along the way. By the time C1 got to the big treasure, he had a Mickey Mouse coloring book, Mickey Mouse pajamas and a Mickey Mouse t-shirt, in addition to the bubbles, the small shovel, and Mickey Mouse gloves.

Idea 3: Mickey Mouse Pizza

After all that activity and fresh air, the treasure hunters were hungry. Pizza is one of C1’s favorite foods. It was really easy to make a Mickey Mouse shaped pizza to celebrate his birthday. Just use a large crust and two personal-sized pizza crusts. On the large crust, you’ll see I used different sized pepperoni slices to create Mickey Mouse shapes too.

Idea 4: Mickey Mouse Birthday Cake

We capped off the Mickey Mouse birthday celebration with a treasure map cake. I prepared a regular 9 x 13 boxed cake mix. First I covered it with white frosting. Then I mixed a little chocolate with some white frosting to create the tan color for an aged treasure map. I wanted it to look like the treasure map was laying on the cake so I didn’t worry about the edges. Next I used a decorating bag with a small decorating tip to pipe a dashed line on the treasure map. I mixed a little red food coloring with the white frosting to create an X at the end of the map. When I was done, I embellished the cake with a candle, a few Mickey markers and a small figurine of Mickey driving a car. C1 was thrilled!

Idea 5: Mickey Mouse Birthday Party Supplies

No birthday is complete without having party supplies to help set the theme. I love having special Mickey Mouse paper plates and matching Mickey Mouse Napkins to serve the birthday cake. You can find the Mickey Mouse birthday party supplies we used on Amazon, along with other supplies I mentioned in this post:

    1. Steph, we’ve done scavenger hunts inside too. It’s just as enjoyable and in some ways there are even more places to hide the clues. Have fun with it!
